MLK Poster Contest Winners

Over 100 Midway Middle School students participated in the Liberty County poster contest in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.   The theme for the contest was "Reconnecting with Our History While Focusing on Our Future."  Out of all the posters submitted by schools throughout Liberty County, two Midway Middle School students walked away as 1st and 2nd place winners!

Shelby Logan won 1st place for her poster showing Dorchester Academy, the first school in Liberty County for freed slaves.  She cleverly depicted one half showing how the academy looked in 1876 and the other half showing how it looks today.

Megan Muir won 2nd place for her poster showing important historical figures who devoted their lives to equal rights – Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Mohandas Gandhi, and Abraham Lincoln.  She also added the message “Treat Others the Way You Want to Be Treated.”

To help prepare for the contest, students watched “The Children’s March,” a documentary based upon African American children who in 1963 marched for equal rights in BirminghamAlabama and were subsequently put in jail.  Thanks to their courage and fortitude, they helped to end segregation.

Students also read informative materials from the media center to learn more about our African American history.  Thanks to Mrs. Dover and Ms. Gadsen in the media center for all of your assistance!

Students also viewed a PowerPoint presentation to educate them on the history of the United States with thought provoking images from slavery to the presidency, from segregation to integration, from the Renaissance to the Harlem Renaissance, from Harriet Tubman to Oprah Winfrey, and, ultimately, from Mohondas Gandhi to Martin Luther King, Jr.

This contest was sponsored by the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Observance Association, in HinesvilleGA, thanks to Mr. Johnson and Mr. Jackson of Midway Middle School!
