Sketchbook Assignments

Students were assigned a variety of sketchbook assignments in addition to their art projects.  These assignments were based upon "real-world" graphic arts scenarios.  Before beginning each assignment, students were required to look up the definitions of the words that appear in bold.  Below are some examples of their work...

"You are a textile designer working for Target.  Your job is to design several different patterns to be used for a new line of sheets and towels that has unity.  Divide your sketch paper into 8 squares.  Use lines and shapes to completely fill each square with a different pattern.  Use colored pencils and/or markers to complete your work;  use 2-3 hues to complete each pattern."

"You are a layout designer working for Busch Gardens in Tampa, FL.  Your job is to create a sign for one of their animal exhibits.  Draw an animal from a model using modified contour lines;  fill the page with your composition.  Add texture to your animal using pencil, colored pencils and/or markers;  add the animal’s shadow to make your drawing look more realistic."

"You are a medical illustrator working for a company that specializes in posters for doctors to display in their waiting rooms.  Draw a vertical line down the middle of your paper so that it is divided into two equal parts.  On the left side of your paper, draw the front of a skeleton from a model using correct proportions.  On the right side of your paper, draw the back of a skeleton from a model using correct proportions.  Fill in the background (the negative space) with pencil."

"You are a graphic designer who works for the Hallmark Greeting Card Company.  Your job is to design a Get Well card.  Draw a flower in a flower pot from life using modified contour lines.  Use colored pencils and/or markers and shading techniques to make your drawing look realistic."
