Australian Bark Painting

Sixth grade students learned about prehistoric art that was made by the Australian Aborigines.  They combined the art of bark painting and dot painting and created a triptych - a work in three parts - of three different animals.


















African Masks

Seventh graders viewed examples of prehistoric African art and discussed the purpose of African masks which was to hide the person's identity during ceremonies.  Then they created their own masks using chalk pastels, beans, feathers and rafia.





















Petroglyphs

Eighth grade students learned about prehistoric rock art in Europe and North America.  They selected Native American symbols (petroglyphs) to engrave into metal tooling foil, then cut curving lines around the edges of the foil to simulate rock carvings.

Judging a Book by Its Cover

Students listed at least 12 of their favorite things and drew them on the cover of their portfolios.  Using colored pencils and markers, they completed their artwork.
